While he didn't do much in his debut or in his second match with Chivas USA against Houston in SuperLiga, Giancarlo Maldonado looks like an upgrade in talent. On a couple of through balls, one which left Bornstein wide open right in front of the goal in a one-on-one against the goalie, he exhibited a lot of touch on his passes. And on the negative he also showed a lot of frustration on the field when his teammates couldn't reciprocate. He better get used to that...

It was announced yesterday that Jonathan Bornstein would be playing for Tigres in Mexico effective January 1st. I hope that means we're getting someone big in return...

And finally watching Chivas USA take the field in SuperLiga matches this weekend with their new additions I couldn't help but think one thing... This team still needs more talent but more specifically they need a facilitator at the mid-field that can get the ball through to guys like Giancarlo Maldonado, Justin Braun or Jesus Padilla.

Until they can get that guy Chivas USA will continue to struggle to score goals.

To say that Chivas USA has had trouble scoring goals would be a gross understatement. 15 goals in 14 games is atrocious. Gone are Maicon Santos, who wasn't able to get the ball in the back of the net in MLS, and Sacha Kljestan, who bolted for Europe after being snubbed by the US World Cup team...

To compound matters Maykel Galindo has been non-existent and continues to lose playing time to players like Justin Braun and Jesus Padilla. Justin Braun being about the only bright spot for the goats this season with his size (6'3) and his big foot offensively.

Chivas USA has recently announced that Venezuelan international Giancarlo Maldonado will be joining Chivas USA today for their match in SuperLiga begging the question is Giancarlo Maldonado the answer for Chivas' offensive woes?

At 28 years old he's not your prototypical MLS signing... He's still in his prime and he's definitely not on his legs and I don't think we have to worry about maldonado having anything left at this stage of his career. Ante Razov anyone???

Maldonado has scored 3o goals in 61 appearances for Atlante of the Mexican league but perhaps more importantly and against better competition he also has scored 19 goals in 48 games for Venezuela. At 28 he's already the country's leading scorer.

This is definitely another step in the right direction for Chivas USA. Along with the signing of Paulo Nagamura the team is taking the right steps to improve the overall talent of the team. Rumor has is that Chivas USA is also in the market for a strong center back and an attacking midfielder to replace the departed Sacha Kljestan.

Personally I'm excited to see what Giancarlo Maldonado can do for Chivas USA.

One of the biggest losses Chivas USA took this off season was the retirement of longtime mid fielder Jesse Marsch.
